When you can walk the rice paper…

OK, so I'm watching some old re-runs of Kung Fu (well, seeing's how the show ended over 20 years ago, calling them "old" and "re-runs" is a bit redundant)...

Anyway. I used to love this show. But at the same time, the show infuriates me.

You see, in case you didn't know, the premise of the show was conceived by Bruce Lee. He wanted it to be about a Chinese man roaming the Old West, starring, of course, himself. But alas, the geniuses at ABC decided that America wasn't ready for a Chinese "hero." So they ditched Lee and hired David Carradine instead. Now, you may not have noticed that Carradine isn't the most Chinese-sounding name... that's because he's not Chinese at all. Yes, they had a white guy playing a Chinese guy (I think they explained this by saying that he was only half Chinese).

It's fucking ludicrous. I mean, can you imagine if you went to China and saw a show about, say, John Wayne, and his character was being played by Jackie Chan?

Anyway. So this episode of Kung Fu involves a 15 year old Indian (Native American) boy, and he's played by... Don Johnson. Yes, that Don Johnson - of the singing fame (hey, "Heartbeat" was quite a huge hit!). Whitey McWhite playing a Indian. Well, at least it's nice to see this idiocy across the board.

And... heyyyyy. What a rip.

My favorite part of the show was always the scene they showed before the credits... the one where he grabs that big, hot, wok-like thing with his forearms, so he's branded with those tiger and dragon symbols (every time I see a wok, I think of that scene). And they cut that scene off! What the hell?
Just wanted to say I love your new header.

They've been doing the whole cast the white man instead of the real deal for a loooong time. Many years ago, Orson Welles made a great film called Touch of Evil, starring Charlton Heston, as...... wait for it..... wait for it...... a MEXICAN! Or Jennifer Jones in Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing" as a Chinese woman. It's fairly typical back in the old days, but what can you do?

They're still doing it today, too. In Memoirs of a Geisha, Ziyi Zhang, a Chinese actress, was cast as a Japanese geisha. Some might say that at least Hollywood is getting close, but in my opinion, it just isn't a substitute for the real deal.
