The other day, I was trying to think of the last (music) CD I bought. Like, from a store. Really, I don't like a lot of today's music (hello, can I sound any more like one of those old, crumudgeonly men?), and secondly, I seriously believe that CD's are vastly overpriced. Basically, they're a rip off. Seriously. I've been bitching about CD prices for ten years now, and you know what? Prices are still pretty much the same. Why is that?
And why is it that DVD's are less expensive than CD's? I can go to Target right now and buy the movie "Fever Pitch" for less than 5 bucks. But if I want the soundtrack (is there one?), then it'd probably cost $16.99. And it's not like Fever Pitch was a crap movie... the under-5 section at Target has a ton of pretty decent movies.
Oh! And don't forget the two and three for ones. Have you seen those? DVD's with two or three (semi-related) movies on one disc. For the price of one disc. What a concept! RIAA, what have you given us? Why don't you put multiple CD's on one disc? Why don't your prices go down as time passes?
Seriously, I'd be perfectly willing to pay for more CD's if I
at all felt like I was getting my money's worth. But I haven't felt like that for... years.
Greedy fucking bastards. And what about this? Nevermind that they consider it illegal for you to rip CD's for sharing, how about the fact that they consider it illegal to rip CD's
for your own use. Yes, they actually consider it
stealing. Ripping a CD that
you bought onto your computer so that you don't scratch your CD... that's stealing. Hell, they even consider making a back-up as stealing, too. What next? If I start humming a tune to myself, will I have to pay a quarter to someone?
But, I digress...
Anyway, I was trying to think of the last CD I bought... it's been years, and I honestly can't remember. It may have been the first Phunk Junkeez CD (my 3rd time buying it, after losing it twice). Either that, or The Tom Jones Millennium Collection, on sale at Tower. Now, Tower's been out of business for a while, so... yeah, it's been a while since I've bought a CD.
What about you? What's the last CD you bought?

Since you specified bought I can't list my most recent. ; )
But I did buy the Foo's new one. Love it. And Prince's new one. Meh. Love him...I keep giving his new stuff a go...doesn't quite do it. OH! And Radiohead's In Rainbows. Good grief do I want to marry that group of songs...
I've never been a big purchaser of cds anyway. Or even cassettes when I was younger. My parents just couldn't afford to do that for me so I'd sit in my bedroom with my cassette player on the radio poised and ready to record at a moments notice! Copy friend's. I'm that person. And I don't care!

it was either Jay-Z's or Jill Scott's. Bought them so close together that I can't remember which was last. And the first thing I do when I buy a CD is rip it and then store the CD. Guess I should make sure all the shades are drawn and the doors are locked next time I do that!

Does it count if I bought an entire CD from the itunes store? If so, the last music CD I bought was the soundtrack to Once, and I bought it last summer. Oh, and my mom bought me the Sweeney Todd soundtrack for Christmas!
But the last actual, physical, new CD I bought in a store? I bought some used ones in college: Saves the Day comes to mind. Oh, I know! I bought a Dashboard Confessional CD in college (4 years ago). I've never really listened to it, and I should probably try and sell it or trade it in.

The last CD I bought was about two years ago and I only did so to support my friend and his band The Bradbury Press. Other than his two albums, I purchased the soundtrack to Henry and June (not available online) right before that...and then it's been even longer before another one.
Over five years ago I sold all my cds after copying them all to my computer and it's made life so much easier.

I only bought two in 2007 - JJ Grey & Mofro's "Country Ghetto" (a wonderful mix of blues, funk, rock and old school soul -- pardon me for pimping, Mikey, but
http://www.myspace.com/mofroband for those interested in checking out this great band) and Buckcherry's "15" (a throwback to 80's hard rock).
The rest I just listen to on my computer or online. It's rare nowadays to find a whole cd I like.
Here's a thought for the RIAA - instead of constantly spending money on fighting the losing battle, why don't you use it to embrace technology and lower the prices on cds (since you won't need that extra cash to pay your lawyers)?

Last physical purchase was Weird Al's Straight Out of Lynwood.
Cuz, you know...it's weasel stomping day.

I bought my 11 year old Beastie Boys' License to Ill and Sean Kingston's CD for Christmas. Before that - I can't think of the last CD I bought.

Wow, I can't even remember the last time I bought a CD in a store. I buy songs I like on iTunes and I was given The Rocky Horror Picture Show soundtrack and Tom Petty's Greatest Hits for Christmas, but I usually abhor full CDs. I hate spending all that money when I usually only listen to one or two songs. I will sometimes buy CDs on ebay or through Amazon's resellers, though, if I really want the CD.
I love the cheap movies at Target. I just bought Steel Magnolias for $4.50 this last weekend.

Well, if you read my blog, er-hem, you'd know I just posted about physically getting my butt to a store and buying a real live, new cd. It was the Into the Wild soundtrack. I stopped in my tracks when I saw the 'on sale' price, but I'm so obsessed with the story that I kept going. And you know what? The sound is incredible.

It was Kanye West's 'Graduation.' I bought it even though I had a (illegally) downloaded copy already. I prefer to get my music for free, but if there's something I really like / appreciate, I will step up and pay for it. I know Kanye would been able to eat without me paying for the music, but still... I liked it enough to want the original for my music collection.
Plus, it was on sale at Best Buy for $7.

I have been trying to figure out what might be the "excuse" for CD music pricing vs DVD movie pricing and the only one I can come up with is this:
The movie has a good chance of making big bucks production costs and provide good royalties to performers in the theaters and Pay-Per-View market where this is limited for CDs.
Concert tours will make bucks for the performers and promoters etc. but not for the CD producers except for publicity.
I imagine the cost of producing a movie is far greater than that of producing a CD, so the bucks made in theaters may or may not give a good percentage return vs a CD production.
I do think CDs as they exist today are heading towards extinction. The music industry is being driven towards an "ala carte" pricing structure so we can only hope it comes sooner than later.

Mine was either a live TOOL album or a Coheed and Cambria album. Both are amazing.

I buy albums all the time, but an actual CD in my hand? Just as gifts. I receive them as gifts, too, but I don't buy them, usually.

I bought Sublime - 40oz to Freedom over 2 years ago. And only because my copy was scratched to hell and it wasn't available on iTunes as a whole album. And even then I bought it through Amazon for 10 bucks.

The last two CDs I bought were Raul Malo's Marshmallow World & Other Holiday Favorites and another CD by him - After Hours. I am in the BMG CD Club and got them both for $13.00. I got the new Brian Setzer Orchestra for Christmas.
If I can't buy them for $10.99 or less, I don't buy them. It's ridiculous to pay even that, really. Circuit City has good sale prices on the day CDs are relased. The BMG CD club puts CDs on sale for $6.99 with free shipping quite a bit. (tell me if you want to join, I can get some free CDs if I refer a friend LOL)
I actually did buy a 2 CD "compilation" thing but I found it on Ebay. It was a combo of Brian Setzer's first two solo albums - The Knife Feels Like Justice and Live Nude Guitars. Cost me around $12.
I'm with you on the RIAA shitheads - from what I hear, the artists make about $.10 per song downloaded. How the hell is that right? No wonder Lars was pissed.
