You know what I hate?
The sound in movies. Really.
Have you ever been at home, ready to settle down with a movie... you know, you turn the TV on, you put the movie in, and then you sit down, relax, and...
Oh, shit. Where's the remote? Loud explosions. LOUD. Lemme turn this down.
Oh, shit. Where's the remote? Turn it up! I can't hear a thing they're saying. Why the fuck do they have to whisper when there's explosions going on?
Oh shit! More explosions. Where's the remote? Shit, I need to turn this down.
Fuckin A. Where'd I put that remote? I can't hear a fucking thing they're saying! Thank God for DVR.
Oh great, the club scene. Music blaring. Gotta turn it back down.
Oh shit, major plot point being discussed. In the club. Gotta turn it back up.
Explosions! Turn it back down! Oh shit, more talking! Turn it back up! Wait, turn it down! Up! Down!
Does that scenario seem familiar to you? Doesn't it bug you that you can't just relax during a movie? That you have to have the remote
on hand and ready, due to the extreme volume level changes?
It bugs the fuck out of me.

A lot of TV shows do that too. Really loud "background" music and all of the actors are whispering. It drives me batty!

That does bug me. Almost as much as laugh tracks. Am I really so stupid that I need to be cued to laugh?

I had to replay a scene in a movie last night for that very damn reason. I thought it was me. Or my TV. Or both. Another reason why I'm so batty.

YES. YES IT DOES. IT BUGS THE CRAP OUT OF ME. Oh wait, was I yelling? Sorry about that! Let me turn this down...

Same thing with commercials on tv - much louder than the regular programming. Grr. I don't like to *have* to keep the remote in my hand at all times.

Oh man, I hate that. I should be able to find an acceptable volume and stick with it. The constant up/down drives me insane and you always miss some of the dialog or end up shaking the walls of every house around you. This is why on most DVDs I've resorted to turning on subtitles.

Allow me to add a wrinkle.
You have a baby. Baby is tired and fussy. You just soothed and bounced and sang baby to sleep for a half-hour. You're tired. You settle down to watch a movie (a rarity in your life these days).
As the movie begins, everything is sorta loud, so you turn it down to not wake up baby. After 5 minutes, things get quiet, as you described. You turn it up and settle down into your cozy spot. Suddenly, a car explodes at about 80 decibels. Baby wakes up screaming. Not only do you have to turn it down, but now you've got to rock that kid all over again.
Not good fucking times. Almost not worth watching movies anymore.

My Sweetheart loves it when that happens, because I did not have Tivo before I moved here, and he reminds me how awesome the technology at his house is. (I don't tell him that I could get it on my own, hate to burst his bubble.)

Actually, my TV has different sound options: Theatre, Voice, Sports, blah blah.... Comes in pretty handy. I watch movies on Theatre and TV on Voice.

That is SO annoying - and yeah, the sleeping children thing adds a whole new level of annoyance!

OMGosh, you are not kidding. We have two little ones and I swear every time I think we have the volume at a good level, it goes blaring with sounds of gunshot or screams and I think the kids will wake up, or the neighbors will call the cops!
