They’re already higher

OK, we all know that mid-term elections were held last Tuesday. Many propositions were also decided on Tuesday. Here, in CA, there was Proposition 87, which basically was a tax on oil companies, and that tax would have been used to fund a commission to investigate alternative energies. I say "would have been used to..." because the Proposition was voted down. What a fucking load of crap.

Some of the things that the naysayers said about Prop 87?

Prop 87 means higher gas prices, greater dependence on foreign oil and a new bureaucracy of 50 political appointees with no accountability to taxpayers.
What they don't say is that the new tax can not be passed on to the consumers. And, a new bureaucracy with no accountability? Granted, that's not the ideal situation, but when you consider that that 100% of that money currently goes to the oil company fatcats, well, I'll take the bureaucracy. But, who's got the most advertising revenue? The oil companies. Who's behind the negative 87 ads? Chevron, among others. Who's got the most to lose from 87 passing? Chevron, among others. You know what that means - who's got the most to gain from 87 losing? Chevron, among others. Follow the money.

Well, like I said, it didn't pass.

And I kinda don't think that Chevron will donate $4 billion to try to find alternative fuels.

Four days later, gas prices have gone up anywhere from twenty to thirty cents per gallon, at least what I've seen (around San Diego). What a surprise.

I'm sure I'll get people on here telling me that I voted to throw away taxpayer money to a wasteful bureaucracy. That's fine. I'll just tell them that they voted to keep giving record profits to oil companies.
I am so with you on this one, Mikey. Thanks for writing this post. I just couldn't beleive that prop 87 failed. I couldn't beleive that everything I'd heard (before I moved here) about California being so progressive turned out to be a total load of SHIT. I can't beleive we live with so many freakin' sheep who just believed those ads without a single question.

I voted for Prop 87, and I really beleived it would pass. So much for that.

Exxon reports the most profits - quarter after quarter - than ever before in history, and Californian's just give them the green light to continue getting the oil from OUR ground Tax-Free .... ughhghgghghghgh!!!!!

I am seriously P.O'ed.
Mine's a different thing, but the voters in my lovely city rejected a levy for an income tax increase... one that would've fixed the streets, secured more fire and police jobs and helped our economic growth as a community. You know, all those pesky things that we apparently don't need. Sure, it would've slightly raised our taxes, but I think it's part of getting back what you put in. Ugh, I'm just glad the elections are over.
The impact was way over stated and had very little to do with any truth. The oil isn't going to stop flowing being it cost a few more bucks to pump it. The oil companies pay much more in TX and AK to pump oil from those places, and foreign oil still has a lot of cost associated with shipment.

The one I'm scratching my head about is 70% FOR prop 83. Did anyone read this thing at all?
This election taught me that, no, people don't read the things they vote on. They just read sentence one, skim the rest and give it a pull...
i hate that people can blatently LIE in political ads. there's been one running around here against network neutrality. it says people should vote No for net neutrality because telecom companies just want to charge them more money... LIES. that's not at all what net neutrality is about. and of course most people won't bother to find out what net neutrality really IS about, so they'll vote against it. it just makes me So. Mad.
