OK, I've been meaning to talk about this show for quite a while, but have never really gotten around to it. But, there's finally a slow period here at work, so... here we go.
If you don't know what the show's about, basically, some aging rock stars (Jason Newstead of Metallica, Gilby Clarke of Guns n Roses and Heart, and Tommy Lee from Motley Crue) are putting together a band, and they're looking for a lead singer. And no, David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar, and Gary Cherone did
try out. Oh, and worth mentioning, the producer is Butch Walker.
The contestants have been whittled down to seven. And, in my opinion, there are only two "real" contestants, one "maybe," and really, the rest are pretenders. This is not to say that they're not great performers or singers, but they're just not "right" for the band. Andrea Bocelli is one hell of a singer, but I don't see him belting out covers of "Master of Puppets" and "Live Wire." It's not just about talent, but it's about "fit" with the band.
Patrice - good singer, good performer, and the original song she did last night wasn't bad. But, like Dave Navarro said, she may not be right for the band, but she should definitely pursue a solo career. She's just too "Lilith Fair" to be a part of Supernova. Maybe they could take her on tour as an opening act.
Toby - if there was ever a Rockstar: Sugar Ray, Toby would win, hands down. He might even beat Mark McGrath. But this is Rockstar: Supernova. If he's not gone this week, then he'll be gone next week.
Ryan Star - I'll admit, he's getting better. But still, he's a pretender. You can tell that he doesn't know what to do with himself when he's on stage. He could be a great frontman in two or three years, after he gets some experience in front of audiences. He's just not ready to front a major label rock band right now.
Storm - nice voice. Self assured. Confident. And, dare I say, kinda sexy. But she doesn't have anything that makes her stand out, compared to some of the other contestants. When you listen to her sing, she'll start out strong, but never get stronger. Her voice kinda disappears by the end of the song. I'll tell you what, though... you just
know Tommy Lee would love to take her on tour with them. And who could blame him? She seems like one of those girls that are a blast to hang out with, because you never know what kinda trouble she's about to cause.
Lukas - the love child of Adam Ant and Billy Idol. Still hasn't learned to open his throat and really
sing. Still, I can see him as a frontman. Just not for this band. He's a bit too glam. Too Marilyn Manson, if you will. Manson is still rock, sure, but it's not hardcore, no-frills, would-sound-the-same-in-a-garage rock. If they decide to go in that direction, I could see him winning. But I doubt it.
Dilana - I'll admit, I didn't "buy" her act at first. But you know what? She's definitely,
definitely got her own groove. One of the only serious contenders for lead singer, in my book. There doesn't seem to be anything about her that's an act (unlike Ryan, Lukas, and even Storm) - she really seems to be a freak, and she's not afraid to show it. And, aside from all that, she seems like a really great person. No, seriously! The only bad thing I have to say about her is... wow, those eyelashes last night were pretty hideous.
Magni - the favorite, as far as I'm concerned. He's got an amazing, powerful voice, great control (of both the voice
and the mic), knows how to work the crowd, and just can flat-out perform. He's polished. He's ready to front this band
right now. The only drawback is that he might force a tour date in Iceland.
So, we'll see who wins. I'll tell you what, though... even if Magni and Dilana don't win, somebody should sign them, because they are definitely rock stars, just waiting to happen.
