OK, so, I know I have at least two readers from New York... so who's heard of the DJ Miss Jones on HOT97? What's she like? Is she like, a female shock jock or something? I'm just curious...
Because I heard she was suspended for
playing a song parody about the tsunami victims.
Now, you hear about this kinda shit all the time. Sometimes, I'll agree with the suspension, sometimes I won't. I mean, let's face it... sometimes, DJs get suspended for things that aren't even that offensive. But then I read the lyrics, and... well hey, you tell me if you think it's offensive: (
sung to the tune of We Are the World)
There was a time, when the sun was shining bright
So I went down to the beach to catch me a tan.
Then the next thing I knew, a wave 20 feet high
Came and washed your whole country away.
And all at once, you can hear the screaming chinks.
And no one was saved from the wave.
There were Africans drowning, little Chinamen swept away.
You can hear God laughing 'Swim you bitches, swim.'
[Chorus]
So now you're screwed. It's the tsunami,
You better run and kiss you ass away, go find your mommy.
I just saw her float by, a tree went through her head
And now your children will be sold - child slavery.
Dude, seriously. How fucked up are those lyrics? And that doesn't include the verse where she talks about shooting Asians. Nice. Hate speech, much?
Man, I wish I could read a story where like, a dog rescues a dying family or some shit like that. Because this other shit that dominates the news really pisses me off sometimes.

Chinamen? Did the tsunami even go to China?
You gotta love when racism is slanted with ignorance, then buttered with that dash of tragic indifference that makes it all so yummy.
The "Coon King" DJ guy slipped and fucked up. These cats are WAY out of line.
Child slavery? What does that have to do with anything?

Living in NY...Hot 97 isnt really my type of radio station but I think she is just trying to rattle feathers. She first came out and said had she know it would have angered so many she would have played it more than she make a weak ass apology on the stations site (no doubt pressure from Hot97 to apologize). Poor judgement, you bet but my thing is suspend her and move on. The more you pay attention to it the bigger the song gets. I mean it made the 10pm news the other night and i was like if you look at if from the point of view of the people who made the song, well they made the 10pm news top story which will only encourage more of this behavior.

Mikey, I hope that there is someone in their life to remind them of this when some tragedy visits upon them. It does and will come around to them...

If you are going to use a racial slur, at least get it right. Magaret Cho had an ongoing gag where she said people would call her a "Chink." She would say, "Hey! Get it right, I'm a gook." Probably very un-PC, but right on target.

i dont know why anyone would write that song, or play that song on the radio, or find it even remotely funny. i'm pretty open minded and hard to offend, but that just crosses the line.

It wasn't her who talked about shooting Asians. Miss Jones and the newsgirl (called "Miss Info"), who is Asian, got into a fight on the air because Miss Info refused to have anything to do with the song. Miss Jones accused of her "feeling superior" because she was Asian, and on-air squabbling ensued. Then later, her co-host, a guy named Todd Lynn, just said later in the fight, "I'm gonna start shooting some Asians." I have the aircheck of the song and the fight if you want it.

I tried to find you something good in the news, but after a few minutes I got all depressed and gave up. I mean, depressed but not "leave my van on the train tracks" depressed...

I miss the days when deejays used to play music in the morning without any need to be "shocking," or to be telling inane "jokes" every few minutes. In the morning, I need the weather, the time once in a while, and music, leave the "comedy" until later in the day, when I might find it amusing

WTF? i can't believe the level of stupidity sometimes. and these people work in radio!? in the NY market no less!
for the love...
i don't get the whole "superiority" thing. to me, that makes absolutely no sense. i didn't realize that you had to have a superiority complex to want to not have anything to do with something so rude and so classless.
morons.

What could possibly make anyone think that 150,000+ people dead would be good for a chuckle? Death and destruction, what a knee slapper.
Karma's a bitch.

Bad taste? Absolutely. Are there more news worthy items out there? Hell yes. However, what about the issue of free speech? Aren't we supposed to be able to speak as we please in this country? If you don't like it, turn it off.... I hate to see shit like this happen cause where do you draw the line? It was offensive as hell but someone is always going to be offened by something....ya know? Like when Mikey talks about two foot shit...

Ew, that's just ASKING to be fired.
Or shot.
That'd be like making fun of 9/11.. you just don't go there.
Yeah, that's offensive...
Because it's not even remotely funny! I thought being witty was a prerequistite of radio.

free speech? free speech? ok dude, go to Compton and call some folks "niggers"... see how far your free speech gets you.
my point is this: hate speech is
not covered by the First Amendment. you asked where the line should be drawn, well, that about covers it. pretty obvious to me.
of course, i'm just a screaming chink, so what do i know?

I cannot believe there was someone out there that was disgusting enough to make that song, let alone air it.
Man, this entry brought me down. Let's inject some humor through the magic of movie quotes.
"Dude,
Chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature.
Asian-American, please."
"Walter, what the fuck are you talking about? These are not the people who built the fucking railroads here. This is a guy who peed on my rug."

The issue at hand isn't the first amendment. It's the sad state of humanity (or the lack-there-of) in our country. Indeed they should have the right to say this and anything else they want to. Hopefully though, the majority will rise up against this level of public hate mongering. I hope any station that considers hiring these assholes again gets boycotted.
It's odd how soon this came after that "Martin Luther Coon" slur made by the las vegas weatherman a few weeks ago...
Both stories made me sick. I'd put a link to that story here, but uhhh, it's long. Just google "fired weatherman"

Oh. My. Gawd. I cannot believe that is real. I haven't watched/read the news all day so I did not even hear about this. That is some fucked up shit. That person would be lucky if she doesn't get her ass seriously kicked.
And to answer Maine's question about child slavery. That part of the world has the highest rate of people taking orphan children and selling them. And so they are extra worried about predators getting their hands on many of these kids who lost their families since the tragedy.

I don't listen to NYC radio any longer, not after what happened to WNEW. It's all live music off of Archive for me these days.

I hope that someone beats the fuck out of all of the people associated with that song. Maybe we should gather a posse?

OMG, and I got suspended when I was in radio for not playing enough Canadian content. That's completely irrelevant compared to that. I would expect to be fired.

OMG! How could you think that was airable? Freedom of speech does not mean that you can be as ignorant and nasty as you want, or to air it to the masses. If she would have done it at home, shared it with a friend, dumb, yes, offensive yes, but to AIR IT PUBLICLY is WRONG on so many levels. I am not a prude or a sheltered child. I am pretty open minede about life the universe and everything but damn. Sho show respect . No Matter what the sentiment is. Wanna make fun of yo mamma? The korean grocer? Your whtie boss? Do it at home, not in public. I don't care who or what you are, nowadays you just can't do it without offending someone. And I am hunky from the eastern coast, but I can take a polish joke.

Hey I just went to
http://www.hot97.com/ and read their take. Apparently Sprint and McDonalds have pulled all radio ads on the station in response to the song. Good Hit em in the pockects where it wil hurt. But note that she is only suspended. Not fired. WTF?
Posted by on 01/28 at 07:29 AM
As a listener of Hot 97 I was deeply disturbed by this. Why bother to be shocking when you're already the number one station in your genre? I didn't hear this live when it happened, nor would I want to hear it now. This is just absurd. In the wake of NippleGate, O & A firings, and Howard Stern fines there is no room for this idiocy in the media. Suspension is a copout and just a slap on the wrist. Terrible.
