OK, so. Shit, I dunno how to start this.

I know. Go read this post (note: that post has since been edited). I don't know this guy, and I've never heard of him before today (just stumbled on his blog). I have nothing against him at all.

Did you read it? Just out of curiousity, what kind of "vibe" did you get?

I'm asking because... well, sometimes, I tend to get a little over-sensitive when it comes to race and general discrimination issues. The fact that I'm a minority really brings this out in me. And when I read that post, I felt an all-too-familiar twinge.

So, we all know that racism is bad. Period. We can all agree on that, right?

Well, there are a lot of people who don't think that they're racists or bigots, but they totally are. You know, like Trent Lott. They always say the same shit... "I have black friends," blah blah blah, but behind closed doors, they're all nigger this and spearchucker that. Do you know what I mean? They're basically "closeted" bigots.

That's how I perceive this guy. Maybe he's just really full of himself or something, but his language, his context... it all tells me that he's one of those aforementioned closeted bigots. Obviously, I could be wrong. I'm just telling you the vibe I got.

Now, don't go and berate this guy or leave nasty comments on his blog - that's not my goal. He's got a right to his opinions just like anyone else. I'm just trying to figure out if I am truly over-sensitive to shit like this. And if I'm right, well then, maybe I'll make it easier for everybody else to spot closeted bigots, so that we can avoid them, or at the very least, disregard their bullshit. Or confront them on it. Bring their hatred out of the closet and into full public view. That kinda stuff.

So, be honest. Am I reading too much into what he's saying, or do I have a valid point? All opinions are welcome.

Well, unless you're a Celine Dion fan. Man, she's gross.

Yeah, you’re over-reacting. He obviously meant that the people who sat near him on a desolate beach were “ignorant”, not Hispanics in general. As far as the gay episode; the dude was hitting on him. I know because I know the author. Honestly, you aren’t necessarily a homophobe just because you are uncomfortable with another man making passes at you. Now, while you’re all so geared up on the race issue lets look at this from an anthropological standpoint. There is no such thing as “race” what you are all referring to is nationality. I know this guy and though your minds are already made up and many of you will never read this I will say, for the record, that he is not a racist. He hates all people equally…and his truck does smell like nasty gym socks, but he is not racist and his comments if read without pre conceived racial leanings would have been taken for what it was, just a day at the beach. You should all re-examine your own over-the-top ideas of what should or should not be bigoted and not call a total stranger horrible things behind his back. Life is too damn short and people, in general, are too damn funny.

Hi, I'm another friend of Mike's and can say that he is not a racist or a homophobe. Most of the more outrageous comments on his blog are jokes. If you knew him, you would realize how much of what is offending you is actually sarcasm. Oh, and Nox, as far as the not capitalizing Chinese, it happens in the title of a "heyfreak" post just a few days ago. You can't seriously judge a person based on obvious typos (of which I am sure there are plenty in this comment). As well, I'd like to say that Mike is the sort of guy who will go out of his way to help anyone in need (no matter their race, gender, or sexual orientation). He just likes his space at the beach, and was relating a story with some discriptive adjectives and a few jokes. Just because you didn't find it funny is no reason to be so insulting to a total stranger.

But wasn't that very post insulting to total strangers? Just sayin..

God, you people are sad. Can't you step into someone else's shoes for a second? What if you found that not a couple but a huge number of people were talking like this about you? Can't you even imagine how you would feel, more over if you weren't what these people were labeling you? I told him that any attempt to change minds would be met with anger and distrust and it has. it's not my fault that other people thought the same way, and it's not my fault that they went over there and left nasty comments. i can't control these people any more than you can.

if people were labeling me like that? sure, i'd feel bad. but then i'd think "hey, why did they label me? was it something i said?" well duh, obviously, people are labeling mad mike because of what he said. he may or may not be a bigot; i don't know. i didn't say that i knew.

all i'm saying is, if he's not a homophobic bigot, then why does he talk like one?

and. if he talks like a homophobic bigot, then he shouldn't be surprised when people treat him like one, or label him as such.

Wow. I mean, like, WOW. Relax. I TRULY think he meant those words as adjectives. Really. Back in the day. we made fun of all kinds of people-our roommates, my family, etc-and we used all sorts of words to describe them. Remember my Vegan friend Kathleen-all sorts of crazy words to describe her crazy ass. Didn't you used to call me a "dumb blonde?". It just depends on how one chooses to look at things. I am in no way trying to create ill feelings between us. I know this has always been a sensitive subject for you. Not sure what my point is, but I hate to see a lot of people getting worked up about this. Can't we all just get along??

well personally I can say I never left a comment on this guy's blog directly and only commented on the way he came off. If I am ever out of line in any of my posts then I'm sure people will have their own opinions about that too... But to anon, a reminder - what we put on the internet is there for anyone to see. If I had a buck for every person who has been searching for the topic of bikini waxing photographs (trust me, the pic is done as a giggle and I've been getting the perves) I'd be rich. It's out there for public consumption. But I'd not bother to bombard him or harass. What I said on my own blog, about "if you don't like what someone else is saying, you don't have to read it, or do your own" really does apply even though it was inspired by a completely different circumstance.

I am a friend of Mike's. He isn't a racist. He may be guilty of a little prejudice thought processes, but let me ask you something: When was the last time you went a whole day without judging white people, or latinos or greeks (i.e., fraternity, sorority type). I am actually stretching and assuming you have been to are in or are about to be in college for this one. regardless, the point is, we judge other groups of people. Yes. We ALL do. You know it to be true. Your sensitivity in my white, majority class, racist, etc. opinion is a result of a sustained attitude your family and friends and associates have. NOt unfounded. After all, this was a nation with institutionalized racism. But if you look at the facts, the country has made substantial efforts to fix things. I can't say a lot for joe redneck the KKK member, but truth be told, those are just sad and pathetic people.
Racism, as it is commonly used, implies a hatred. Hitler was a racist. He had a sense of intolerance for all but the arian(sp?) race. Mike, is not a racist. He doesn't hate you for being a minority. He doesn't hate you for judging him, either. He does make judgments about people based on their looks and thier behaviors.
Case in point: I judged you to be an angry minority. I have one little post that you wrote to go on. That one post isn't much, but just as you did to Mike, I made a judgment. I may not be right. I am not entirely confident it it as the wishy washiness of this comment may demonstrate, but its my judgment and I am entitled to it. I am also entitled to change it.
You have every right to post what you did. So does Mike. But ask yourself this question: Isn't life too short to get bent out of shape over something some stranger wrote on an obscure website that only a handful of people read? If you are going to be concerned about that, I suggest you drop everything you are doing and become a champion of neutral thinking. Dedicate yourself to irraticating racism and prejudism, throughout your home state. Then move on to the rest of the country. Then the U.N., etc. But don't pick your battles. You are doing a disservice to all of mankind.

One more thing. As if I haven't babbled enough. My friends are pricks too. Thier nasty responses to the torrent of negative comments hasn't solved anything. But at least you can rest comfortably knowing Mad Mike is not such a bad guy, just misunderstood.
