OK, so. Shit, I dunno how to start this.
I know. Go read
this post (
note: that post has since been edited). I don't know this guy, and I've never heard of him before today (just stumbled on his blog). I have nothing against him at all.
Did you read it? Just out of curiousity, what kind of "vibe" did you get?
I'm asking because... well, sometimes, I tend to get a little over-sensitive when it comes to race and general discrimination issues. The fact that I'm a minority really brings this out in me. And when I read that post, I felt an all-too-familiar twinge.
So, we all know that racism is bad. Period. We can all agree on that, right?
Well, there are a lot of people who don't think that they're racists or bigots, but they totally are. You know, like Trent Lott. They always say the same shit... "I have black friends," blah blah blah, but behind closed doors, they're all nigger this and spearchucker that. Do you know what I mean? They're basically "closeted" bigots.
That's how I perceive this guy. Maybe he's just really full of himself or something, but his language, his context... it all tells me that he's one of those aforementioned closeted bigots. Obviously, I could be wrong. I'm just telling you the vibe I got.
Now, don't go and berate this guy or leave nasty comments on his blog - that's not my goal. He's got a right to his opinions just like anyone else. I'm just trying to figure out if I
am truly over-sensitive to shit like this. And if I'm right, well then, maybe I'll make it easier for everybody else to spot closeted bigots, so that we can avoid them, or at the very least, disregard their bullshit. Or confront them on it. Bring their hatred out of the closet and into full public view. That kinda stuff.
So, be honest. Am I reading too much into what he's saying, or do I have a valid point? All opinions are welcome.
Well, unless you're a Celine Dion fan. Man, she's gross.

I tend to agree with you. He could have just as easily said "group of people" or "bunch of assholes" if it applied. If their race wasn't the issue, why mention it?

If I was having a conversation with this guy and he'd said that stuff, I would have stopped him partway through and said, "Hi, you're being way too intolerant for me. I can't believe that you just made those snap judgments. So some people were FISHING near you, big fat friggin' deal! And who cares if the people next to you are French?" +more politically correct rambling because I'm really super anti-discrimination (although I'm big enough to realize that I do some myself, i.e. calling Britney Spears white trash).
I'm hoping that guy was maybe being sarcastic and kidding, but if he wasn't, that's a seriously creepy dude. I don't think I'd want to see him in real life.

I can see why it made you cringe a little. As a white chick, I haven't experienced MUCH racism (beyond being called "wetta" by my Mexican in-laws!) but I feel like I sort of know what you're talking about - every time I hear someone talking about "some stupid fat bitch" it always pisses me off. Like, what does her being fat have to do with anything?

Any time somebody prefaces a statement with something like "Now I have nothing against the French, but..." you can bet that the next words out of their mouth will be some racist bullshit about the French.
If this guy actually hates "ignorant people" I have no idea how he lives with himself.
Did you note his spelling of "chineese"? Like the Chinese aren't worth capitalizing or spelling correctly.
See, I've got nothing about bigoted scum who can't spell common words,
but... this guy really seems like a pathetic douchebag.
The worst thing is that he's not even interesting in his bigotry. He's a boring guy, living a boring life, writing a boring blog. Wooo, no wonder the "gays" can't keep their eyes off him.

I actually reacted pretty much the same way that you did and I clicked on the link before reading the rest of your post so it wasn't like, sympathy pains or anything.
I've often wondered if I was oversensitive to race/discrimination stuff, too. I'm part French (only learned to speak english when I was like, four or something-- PLUS I love cheese) and part of my heritage is First Nations, though you'd never be able to tell by looking at me. Of course I *look* more like the Irish side. Anyway, how many times have I been caught up in a conversation where the other person is talking about how "Indians bla bla this" or "French people bla bla that", only to have to pipe up and say "Uhm, excuse me..." and watch their faces redden...

Mikey, I agree with you. Something there does not sit well with me.

I got bad vibes reading it too. I wanted to leave him a nasty comment, but decided not to -- he's entirely too lame, and not worth anymore of my time.

I'm vibalicious.
It's that whole sentence about "I have nothing against gays, mexicans..." That's like the international closet bigot anthem.

Ok, time to spend my two cents, although everyone else basically covered what I had to say (which is great, glad we're all on the same page here) But yeah, if he claims to have nothing against any of those groups, why even feel the need to mention it? He could have just said "3 people" or "this couple". Then he has the audacity to express his dislike for ignorant people?
Things that make you go hmmmmm
awwwww my word to retype below is "joelle"

Ok... I read it. And he does have a "hint" of racism, but I do believe he was using "Mexicans" as an adjective and nothing more. (That's the trouble with writing, you have to give adjectives in order to paint a picture.) I guess if had used the term "brown people" instead, I could see an argument there.
If I was going to the beach for some quiet time to reflect and people (any people) came over to where I was sitting and began to annoy me... I would MOVE!
Lighten up Frances.

Two things: Laura, maybe they call you "güera"? Are you perhaps blonde? Which wouldn't be racist, since they call ME that, and I am mexican. The second: being mexican, I was offended. ANd perhaps, being mexican, I am sensitive to it too, but the assumption that there's inherent ignorance, damn it, that just got to me.

He's doing the shock jock thing. Trying to be edgy and funny. And failing. Miserably.
Try not to feed the trolls. It makes them all gassy.

I'm with Tanya, he's just another attention-getter. Now
this guy, on the other hand...
There used to be a few posts there that would literally make your skin try to crawl off your body. With that domain name, I would expect we'd be in for more of the same. Cockroaches, man, they hate the light of day.

i havent' read all of the comments so no clue if i'm repeating what others have said, but i take offense to his tone too. the fact of the matter is that he didn't need to single out the people's race, ethnicity or sexual orientation. all that needed to be said was that he feels people infringe on his personal space. that he felt the need to mention the other things, yeah, speaks to me of a bigoted attitude.

patricia on 05/05 at 07:49 PM
Yeah he's just an ignorant troll, tends to be a bit racist otherwise why mention where they come from but seems to have more of an issue with personal space. if the beach truly was not crowded and they're invading his peace I can get that a little bit but he just comes over as an ignorant git trying to talk himself up and instead coming across as a jerk. he should be so lucky to be "stalked" it means someone likes him.

The guy sounds very full of himself and a bigot to boot. Like anyone who isn't exactly like him isn't a valued member of the human race. Not to mention he can't spell. It just sounds like he needs a reality check that he isn't really all that. LOL

It's more than a "hint" of racism, and you aren't oversensitive. As far as I'm concerned what he wrote wasn't subtle. Not as far as the gay stuff or the race stuff.

Laura, maybe they call you "güera"?
::blushing::
I guess that's entirely possible; I never asked them to spell it. Ha!

I think some of that, like using the term Mexicans, was an attempt to be descriptive and a bad attempt at being snarky but his racist/culturalist/homophobic pantylines were definitely showing. Assuming they were from Mexico because they were Spanish-speaking, that all French are stinky and like cheese, and that gay men wouldn't be able to control themselves if they saw his pale nacked cracker ass.
I'm definitely a grammarist for judging people by their spelling and misuse of "there" vs "their".
Speaking of the "some of my best friends are black" excuse, whenever I hear that I can't help thinking about Pim Fortuyn, an openly gay anti-immigrant nationalist in The Netherlands who was once quoted as saying something along the lines of "I don't hate Muslim men, I've had sex with lots of them." To me that's like the mother of them all.
Interestingly, he was assasinated in 2002 -by a guy who was not Muslim nor an immigrant but an animal welfare and environmental activist.

Hmm, I'm gay, mostly Mexican with a smidgeon of French. What I want to know is: where is he going to be next? That way I can park my ass one foot away from him.
Posted by Vince on 05/06 at 03:43 AM
No, you didn't misread it. Dirty French? WTF?
If the guy was so uncomfortable, why the fuck didn't HE get up and move?
Now, ya know I come from a family where any kind of joke (even racist jokes) are par for the course. It's my opinion that laughing at yourself is a good thing and that most of these jokes have some small measure of truth (except for the really vile ones.)
I will never forget the time my dad was bitching about some *fuckin' mick* at work. so i say, "But Dad, you are a fucking mick." He says, "I don't fucking care!"
Homer Simpson, anyone?
But that guy who wrote that post wasn't funnin'. He's an idiot.

I got the exact same vibe, Mikey.
Anyone who makes the effort points out the race (or any other characteristic that doesn't define someone's character) when speaking of someone pissing them off is usually making the effort to in order to express the presumption that the characteristic has something to do with the reason the people did the thing that pissed him off.
He's either a complete idiot who didn't think how his message would be perceived or a flat-out bigot who's having trouble keeping it "in the closet". My bet is on the latter.
