One year later…

Bush to mark hurricane anniversary. How nice.

Hurricane Katrina lashed President Bush's image as a take-charge commander in chief when it battered and deluged the Gulf Coast. Ever since, the president has sought to overcome the political damage done when he appeared initially aloof from the suffering and oversaw a balky federal response.

Exactly. Read that again: "Ever since, the president has sought to overcome political damage done when he appeared initially aloof from the suffering..."

Because, of course, "overcoming political damage" is much more important than, I dunno... trying to insure that Katrina victims actually get help?

Please note: I'm not blaming him for Katrina. The hurricane would have hit regardless. What I think he should answer to is the fact that he stayed on vacation for three extra days after Katrina hit, and two days after the levees broke before he could even be bothered to acknowledge the fact that New Orleans was flooded and that people were dying (the acknowledgement? A flyover). There was no sense of urgency on his part to rescue the thousands that were still trapped in the Superdome and the Civic Center. [timeline]

But hey. He's there now. Happy Anniversary, President Bush. You're doing a heckuva job.
un-fucking-believable
It's at times like this that I wish this country was still capable of assassinations. Although I highly doubt Cheney would make a good replacement. *sigh*
Even better was a quote I heard on NPR's Weekend America show this Saturday. When asked what their proudest moment was during their presidencies, President Carter remarked "The Peace Accords at Camp David." Clinton responded to that question by answering "Sending our troops in to end the war in Bosnia and bringing peace to that region."

President Bush's response? "My proudest moment was when I caught an 8 lb (or however large) perch in my lake in Texas."

WTF??!?!?! A vacation memory?! Is he a freakin Kindergartner?

I guess it wouldn't be right to say "I'm most proud of killing innocent women and children in Iraq so I could get my paws on their oil supply." So, the perch thing would have to do.

What an IDIOT!
Seems kinda strange that only New Orleans is having problems recovering. Biloxi was harder hit (Katrina had been downgraded twice by the time she hit New Orleans) and it's up and running again... without the attitude that "the feds owe us". Same can be said for much of western Louisiana. My wife was in Lake Charles after Rita hit there. Rita completely wiped out a few towns there - nothing left but some fence posts and sections of highway - and they've rebuilt. Only New Orleans has the entitlement attitude and seems to be completely helpless without the federal government stepping in.
