You know what I hate? I hate when characters in movies are stupid. I don't mean like Lenny or Forrest; I mean like, making stupid choices that "regular" people wouldn't make.
. The new version (with Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning).
watched it last night, and... let me tell you. We spent half the time yelling at the TV because Tom Cruise's character was an idiot.
I hate that. I dunno. For me, any plot that depends on characters making stupid choices in order to build suspense? It kinda kills the suspense. For example (spoilers below)...
OK, after the first attack. The aliens (I don't think their origin was ever mentioned, but in the original, they were from Mars) had just destroyed the city, nothing electrical works (because they preceded their attack with EMPs), and they had to get out of there. He grabs an old school van and starts driving his kids to Boston. And what do they do when they get there?
Well, nobody's home, but the lights are on. Meaning, they have power. Meaning, they haven't been attacked yet. So what do they do? Sleep.
This is where I start yelling. "Hello, turn on a TV? Hello, turn on a radio? Hello, warn the people who haven't been attacked yet?" I mean, what the fuck. The city where I live has been destroyed, but I don't care to hear any news. I don't care to try to figure out what's going on. I'm just gonna sleep. Besides, we're safe. We're in the next town over. Sheesh.
Like any gigantic machine with a disintegrator ray is gonna be stopped by city limits or something.
And then this line... "Oh, there's more than one of those things?" Fucking duh. Perhaps you should have kept up with current events.
Don't get me wrong. I love me some stupid movies. But this was supposed to be "serious." This was a Spielberg movie. I expected more, I guess.
