Mockstar: Ryan

OK, so who watches Rockstar: Supernova?

Shoot, I had such high hopes for this show. Did anyone catch the elimination last night? After a night of good performances, last night's elimination round? Total crap. Total crap.

First. Lukas sings with the band. Can anyone see that he does not have the right voice (vibe, feel, everything) for the band? I freakin' hated the performance.

Next. Toby gets the encore. He sings Rebel Yell again, and, to his credit, does not bring girls up on stage with him. But really, I didn't think of that as an "encore." It was a collection of well placed rock clichés. Note to the remaining contestants: we've seen the "go out and rock with the crowd" shtick a hundred times. Can anyone just stand up there and just rock? Please?

Next. Ryan's in the bottom three. I thought his performance last night was a joke. I think all of his performances are jokes. I mean, talk about a guy who's totally in love with himself. Talk about a guy with delusions of grandeur. So, he performs The Who's "Baba O'Riley"... let me tell you, that was such a load of dung. All he did was scream, and then run around and climb on things... you know, like a raging 3 yeard old does for attention.

Next. Storm's in the bottom three, and she sings... crap, I forgot. Must have been a memorable performance. (I know, it was Helter Skelter. Zzzz)

Next. Dilana's in the bottom three. She sings "Psycho Killer." Whatever. We all knew she wasn't going home, and she should probably be glad, because that performance was totally over the top, too. I mean, it was OK, but I could do without the "act." Again, stand there. Sing. Rock. Can this be done?

Seriously. Remember Zayra? Remember how everybody hated her and her silly "performances?" Well, take a look. Ryan, Storm, and Dilana all out-"performed" Zayra on her best day. And I mean that in a not-so-good way. These didn't look like rock performances. These looked like... they were trying to make cool videos for YouTube. Yes, that'll make them popular with the myspace audience, but do these guys really want that in a lead singer?

So, Ryan's out. Everybody is sad (except for me). This is the best part - fucker goes on to say something like "If you woulda picked me, we coulda made great music together for 20 years, but you decided against it. So, I'm going back to my solo career (HA!). I'll see you guys on the charts." (Again, I'm paraphrasing.)

Hello. No "Thank You." No "This was a blast, and thank you for the opportunity to show you and the world my talent." None of that.

What an ungrateful twat.

I love this show, but damn. It's getting weak. I figured it'd be a rock show. It's becoming a contest to see who can have the most clichéd and over-the-top performance. I sure hope next week is better.

Update: Just for fun... OK, I've always complained about the song choices on this show. So, here we go. If I could pick the songs, this is what I'd have the remaining contestants do:

Storm - Do you wanna touch?, by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. The song rocks, and let's face it... this is right up Storm's alley.

Lukas - Fire Woman, by the Cult. We've seen the guy "glam." Now, let's see the guy rock. With some glam.

Toby - Shake Me, by Cinderella. I'll be the first to admit, he's done a hell of a lot better in the last two weeks. I think he could totally rock this song, and, like the song I picked for Storm, I think this is right up his alley. (Shake me = fuck me) I can see the women already swooning. (Alternate choice - Photograph, by Def Leppard)

Dilana - Looks That Kill, by Motley Crue. I dunno if they're allowed to do Crue songs on the show, but in my ideal world, she'd do this song. Alternate choice - Living Dead Girl, by Rob Zombie.

Magni - Uncle Tom's Cabin, by Warrant. Don't let the Warrant fool you - this song fucking rocks. Alternate choice - Stupify, by Disturbed.

If you've read this far down, you may as well play along - what songs would you have them do?

Updated update: oh, geezus. Fans are bitching that Ryan got the boot. Wah. So, there's a voting controversy. See now, this is the problem with people today. They confuse "their favorite" with "the best fit." And besides, the vote is only to see who's in the bottom three. The eliminations are ultimately done by the band. And, please. Ryan was weak. Did you see his last performances? The male version of Zayra, if you ask me.

But really, I don't see why you're all bitching. If Ryan Star released an album next month, you'd ask "Ryan who?"

I'll say this... I agree with you. This show should have been better and every week it gets a little weaker. The problems that I see come from:

1.) Every contender picking a rock cliche personality and beating it into the ground. What happened to letting your own personality dictate your on stage persona? These guys all act like its Halloween (except Magni, really).

2.) The band themselves. Instead of giving actual constructive criticism, they give inconsistent, half-assed rock soundbites like, "dude, you rocked it," or "that shirt is foul." How can they expect improvement if they're not clear on what they're looking for?

3.) The contenders themselves. These people were chosen because they'er good television, not good frontpersons. They're all insecure and overly dramatic, which, unless you're a genius, never ever ever works out for a band's front person. They need unquestionable confidence and ability, which they all sorely lack.

4.) The songs chosen. How on earth can they expect amateurs to impress anyone by singing covers of the biggest most iconic rock songs in history? They stand zero chance of improving them! They stand very little chance of even matching the original! Rebel Yell, for crying out loud?! You can't out-rebel-yell Billy Idol! Why not choose good songs that are less iconic? You can't improve "I Alone." You just can't!!
I don't watch any of the performance shows and I used to scoff at the reality show watchers, but I have the DVR set to auto-tune to Celebrity Fit Club at 1:00.
I agree, last night's show was shit. However, I felt they all did good the night before. I even enjoyed Ryan's "Clocks" more than I thought I would. It was definitely time for him to go - what a wannabe!! I noticed the lack of gratitude, too. Ignorant!

I think Toby and Magni have the best stage presence and I guess I'm not alone in thinking that since Magni never even once went to the bottom three when the votes were coming in.

My biggest problem with the show? Dave Navarro. This guy is a complete JOKE.
Crap! I wish I remember which website I saw this on, but there was a story yesterday that Lukas Rossi has already won the competition but they're crafting the rest of the show for TV.
If Ryan Star released an album next month, I'd think "Wasn't she the pretend rocker on Season 1 of American Idol who always wore gloves that looked like she raided Madonna's wardrobe circa 1984?" Then I'd remember that that was Ryan Starr and continue walking through the store without stopping.

Of course, I have only watch a few minutes of the show a couple different times, so my reaction isn't quite like most fans of the show.
Uh, thanks for the spoiler, rbi90. Ugh!
It's easy to get confused about the goal of these shows when the shows themselves promote the confusion. I saw a Project Runway promo yesterday that encouraged people to vote for their favorite designer instead of encouraging them to vote for the designer who has the most talent. That annoys me to no end.
Ryan always looked constipated to me.

I'll agree with you on Toby; he's been getting on my good side since he did Solsbury Hill. And I agree with all those song choices you made.

I have a small admission. I love Lukas's dimples.
like your choices in songs... I'd love to hear magni belt out some warrent!
I agree regarding Ryan. I thought his performance was asinine. I can't believe he made it as far as he did.
