Memories

OK, I'm about to admit something I haven't spoken about in years, to anyone. No, it's nothing majorly dish-y or anything like that; it's just one of those things that's in the back of your mind, and it's so unimportant that you never really mention it to anybody...

See, I have this weird memory. From when I was a kid (5, I think). It's kind of a weird, creepy memory, but the thing is, it happened so long ago, I don't even know if it really happened. That is, I don't know if it's a "true" memory, or if it was a dream. Do you have any "memories" like that? Where it was so long ago, you don't even know if it's real?

Anyway, here's the story:

So, like I said, I was about 5 years old, and my family was on a trip to the Philippines (I forget if it was Manila or Baguio City) to visit some relatives. Now, where we were staying was a city, but during one day there, we made a trip out to the country to visit some other relatives. So, my relatives are all inside chatting, and I was left with nothing to do. So I went outside and started digging. I don't remember why, but I was just digging in the ground (I guess I found it amusing somehow). Well, about a foot down, I ran into something. I looked into the hole, and there was this like... membrane-y looking thing, just sitting there in the hole. It was white-ish and soft looking. And it was expanding and contracting, like it was breathing or something. It definitely looked alive. I don't know what it was or what it could have been, but I got the impression that it was big. It was as wide as the hole (small hole, maybe 6 inches across or so), and it filled the whole thing; surely, I could have seen more of it, but I didn't know what it was, and being only 5, it scared the shit out of me. Seriously. I "remember" thinking "Oh, no!" and then hurredly covering that thing back up. And, to this day, I've only ever mentioned that story to one person.

Maybe because it sounds so unreal. Maybe it's because I'm embarassed that for all these years, I've mixed up a memory for a dream. Maybe it's because I'm scared that it was an alien, and it's coming to get me.

Bottom line: it was just some minor thing that happened years ago, and if I never know what that thing was, I'll still be able to sleep at night. But what was it? What could it have been?

Anyways, that's my "memory" for ya. What about you? Do you have any "memories" that you're not sure were just dreams?
I have a "dream" or a "memory" (I can't tell which) that I had a giant spider on my bed as big as my hand. When I flung the bedspread, the spider landed on the ground "flipped over". It was red underneath and was still able to crawl away, even though it was on it's back.

Totally unlikely, but it seems so real to me, I can't recall if it's a memory or a dream...
Welcome back!

Is it possible it was a frog in a state of suspended animation?

Or maybe it was Cthulu?
the biologist in me really wants to know what it is you found.
I have vivid memories of sleep-walking when I was a kid, and my brother confirms that I DID sleep-walk, but I don't know (for sure) if I did or not. My brother could just be yanking my chain.
When I was 3 my Uncle Bill passed away. When I was 5 my grandfather passed away. Shortly after my grandfather died I remember (or it could've been a dream but it was SO REAL that I swear it happened) waking up in the middle of the night. There was my Uncle Bill and my Grandfather. They were standing at the end of my bed. But it was weird because they were transparent and their heads were less transparent than their bodies. And they were really tall. Anyway, I sat up and had a conversation with them. I asked them about heaven and they told me it was wonderful and that one day I would join them there. Then they said they had to go but I need to remember to be good and they love me.

I started crying because I didn't want them to leave. (the following I know happened for sure because my mom remembers it too) THEN, I went into the living room, grabbed a newspaper and a lighter, walked back into my bedroom, put the newspaper in my tiny garbage can, and lit it on fire. The smoke alarm went off and my mom came running into my room. She grabbed my garbage can and threw it in the bathtub and put the fire out. She was crying and asking me why I did that. I kept telling her because I wanted to go to heaven with Grandpop and Uncle Bill. I told her that they came to me and told me how wonderful heaven was and I wanted to be with them because I miss them.

Pretty crazy, huh?
I've officially isolated every Filipino friend I have at work asking them if they know what this could be. They all say the same thing, WTF???
Memory is a way of holding onto the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose.A memory is what is left when something happens and does not completely unhappen.
