Little victories

I really love life's little victories. Some people don't even notice them because they're too busy or whatever, but I couldn't live without them.

Of what victories do I speak?

Here's one... when you go to a crowded grocery store during peak time, and there's an open spot for you, right next to the front door. This place is always crowded, and you're always having to park a mile away, but today? You're the man. You park up front.

Another one... this one happens in rush hour traffic. You know how, when you're sitting in traffic, your lane is always the one that moves the slowest? The lane to the left? Cruising along. The lane to the right? They're moving too. Switching lanes is the only way to get your lane moving, but by that time, you've already switched lanes, and now you're stopped again. Talk about frustrating. But. On some rare occasions, you're in that left lane, moving, and sometimes, you can time all your lane switches juuuust right, and you move the entire time. Everybody's had this at least once, right? Tell me you didn't go "Fuck yeah, I fucking RULE!" when that happened.

These little victories can be really little, too. But still satisfying. Like, when you're fast forwarding past the commercials on your DVR, and you hit play, and you get it "perfect" - that nanosecond between the last commercial and the return of (whatever show you were watching). I love that.

Little victories like this happen all the time, but I think we take them for granted. We think that they're kind of silly, so we don't tell anyone about them, lest they think we're simpletons or something like that. While we definitely don't want people to think of us like that, it's also very hard to not exclaim joy when you, say, "shoot" a piece of trash into the wastebasket that's way on the other side of the room.

But not today.

Today, I want you to tell me your most recent little victory. Today, I want you to exclaim joy over the most inane things. Even if it's something as small as "I went to the laundry room to take my clothes out of the dryer, and I got there just as it finished. No having to come back, and no waiting. Done right now. And I love the smell and feel of a load full of freshly-done, dryer warmed clothes." Because there's probably more people who love that than you think.

And face it. We love to brag. Even about the little things. And just for fun, if you comment, start your comment with something like "Dude, I so totally rule." Or maybe "I'm da bomb," or "I'm the cat's pajamas." Something. Anything. Praise yourself. Again, it sounds silly, but once you type it out, and then read it to yourself, you'll probably think "You know what? I do fucking rule." You may not be king of the world, but at least for today, you're the king of parking. Or traffic. Or remote controls.

So let's hear your stories...

here's a little thing that is actually annoying me but that i'm trying very hard to turn into a victory. i lost 4 lbs this month. worst month ever since i started this little fun and games but still, as others keep telling me. it's still a loss, even if it's a small one.

so. yay! grin
The small victory that I love so much? Catching the subway JUST at the right time. If you just miss a train god only knows when the next one is going to arrive and God help you if you're transferring because you can just add twenty minutes to your trip right there. And there are those times when you hit the bottom step on the stairs and stand there, pleading silently that the closed subway doors in front of you will open, when the train conductor just sits there staring at you instead of pressing the f*cking button to open the doors.

But sometimes, SOMETIMES, you hit that bottom step, or you walk across the platform to transfer, and the train is right there, just waiting for you to get on and provide you with a smooth trip to wherever you're heading. Those are good times, my friend, good times.
This morning rocked! I made it from Murrieta to the middle of Hemet without hitting one red light. A couple yellows, but not where I had to race through them. Kicked ass, with all the lights on the way to work, I cut 15 minutes from my usual drive time.
I do quite a bit of cross stitching. (Yeah, I'm a geek.) I love when I have just the right length of thread to finish up a row of stitches and I don't have to (a) start a new length of thread in the middle of the row or (b) cut the thread because there's 6 inches left over.
i live for little victories. i think tomorrow i'll make a list of my favorites on my blog. thanks for the inspiration mikey smile
Green lights. All the way through from the highway to the beach. Now THAT's good.
We call those primo parking spaces "Rock Star Parking"-and I love those. smile
But the little victory for me is the one handed "captcha" word that I got for this comment. "free"
I am the bees knees! It's all about little victories and first times for me!

I love the perfect pump at the gas station - where you release the handle exactly on an even number like $10.00.

I also love it when I go the market and the total is an even number like $5.00.

I love when the lights are all green. And that thing, where you're in a crowd, but you manage to maneuver your way perfectly without stopping, kind of like the traffic thing but with people instead!

And when I catch the train right on time.

I love when I call my husband at the exact moment he picked up the phone to call me!

Ooooh. This is sweet! Great post, man!
I'm the shiznit.

I haven't been surfing since November of last year, but now that my office is two blocks from the beach and my boss surfs every day, I've started again.

Yesterday I had one of those days in the water where I just couldn't get into the waves I wanted, was out of position, and when I caught a wave it just destroyed me. Just when I was about to call it a day, this peak pops up right in front of me, I paddle in, call a guy off, make the shoulder and ride it all the way into the beach, with a couple of cutbacks and a mini-barrel shoulder dip.

It felt sooooooooo good, even though it probably looked mediocre from the beach. I called my wife and babbled on her voicemail like I'd been on a 3 day coke binge.

I have the power!

What happens everytime you stop to buy gas? Prices drop immediately, right? The other day, I filled up on the way to work. As I was driving home that afternoon, I noticed the sign: Up 10 cents since I had bought it. That never happens to me, but it did this time.
I kick so much ass!
I figured out how to ungroup linked layers in photoshop...for someone else.

I had never done it before and they didn't know how so I came over, did it and voila! Made myself look like a friggin hero.

I kick so much ass.
I busted a shoplifter today at work....took her down like a whore on nickle night....and she used to think I was sweet...its what she told the cops as they arrested her...I told her she used to be able to shop at Dollar General...Her down fall? Taking our store brand merchandise....
When I filled up my gas tank this morning, it stopped on the even dollar amount ($45.00) on the second click. Love it when that happens, no .06 or .13, just an even .00!
When I balance my checkbook after paying the bills and I have an even amount left. I balanced it two weeks ago and had exactly $56.00 left when I got done.

And hey...ditto with Becki on the cross stitch thread.
Yeah, I'm totally with the cross stictching thing too... my god, thats such a great feeling when you end with just the amount of thread, lol. It does sound geeky though! lol

My great feeling today was when I drove into McDonald's I saw a short line, but I got up to the speaker and the person was just pulling away, so no waiting, then I drove up to the window, and again, I didn't even have to slow down, and then right after I paid I looked up and saw the guy pulling away again..... perfect timing was my victory today. There is nothing better than not having to wait at a drive thru!
It's funny how so many of these involve getting somewhere on time!

My most recent one was following a route Paul told me about all the way across town to the place our son goes for Occupational Therapy - I wanted to avoid the freeway because it was rush hour - and I had to drive down three busy streets and make like twelve turns through neighborhoods - I got to the appointment 5 minutes early (we're usually 5 minutes late) and didn't make ONE wrong turn!

I rule!!
I rock the house!

I just walked around the block all by myself - not a big victory perhaps for most but since I had a huge chunk o' thigh muscle removed three weeks ago this is the first time I've left the house alone and only about the fourth time I've left the house.

Go me!
I am the bees knees because I plugged the wrong meter when I parked on the street, but didn't get a ticket. The meter maids (what is the male equivilent?) are usually very swift with the them.
