Now, I never thought of myself as much of a conspiracy theorist... I'll leave that up to Mr. Fin (he occasionally blogs at
Mouthfart, along with his wife, Ace).
But, yanno? I kinda wonder about some things... do you?
Like...
Do you think that the technology for more fuel-efficient cars is out there, but it's being quieted by the big automakers?
Do you think that technology exists to make non-fossil fuel vehicles? (hydrogen powered cars)
Do you think that there's a cure for cancer, but the drug companies aren't releasing it, because they're making too much money on "treatment"? (treating a problem for the rest of someone's life pays a lot better than just solving the problem, no?)
Do you think the government knows more than it's told us regarding extra-terrestrials?
What do you guys think? Could any of those things be true?
The reason I'm asking is because, well... have you heard of
Mexoryl SX? It's an ingredient found in European and Canadian sunscreens, and it's supposedly
by far better than any sunscreen in the US. So why isn't it sold here? Well, apparently, it hasn't been approved by the FDA. FDA approval could take years. But then again, this product has been out for years in Europe. So why are we so slow to get on the
bandwagon?
Because there's money to be made in skin cancer.
But then again, you'd only think that if you were a conspiracy theorist, right? So, are you?
Do you believe?

I think that Canada is the new "black."
I am Canadian, too

gah, I've got to get to Canada. I sunburn too easily (not good with my new outdoors job -- oh, how I'm looking forward to October).
I think you're right that there is technology out there to make cars that don't need fossil fuel. Now, it might not be completely flushed out, but 4-5 years of heavy funding would do it just fine. However, whatever would happen to oil billionaires if we didn't need fuel for our cars? We'd still need oil for some stuff (perhaps heating, and plastics, of course), but the need would be significantly reduced.
What would be awesome is if the US lawmakers could strike a deal with existing US oil companies that we would completely stop oil imports IF they supported new technology to reduce our oil dependency. Then, we could have all our oil needs met by domestic oil.
then again . . . I'm still not sure they'd go for it.

You know why they're taking a long time? Because PABA, which used to be in all of the 15+ spf sunscreens, turned out to be carcinogenic. They think it damages your dna, and makes you more likely to get the kind of skin cancer that
kills you. Oopsie.

Yep, I believe all of those things you brought up to be true. I'm not much a a conspiracist either (is that a word?), but I do believe that most companies in this country believe if there is a buck to be made--damn right or wrong.

And you know? All that wonderful government sponsored health care in Canada and most of Europe? The government pays for most of it (if you discount that our taxes subsidize it... blah blah)... so it's in their best interests to reduce their costs.
Hmmmm...

Yes. To all of the above.

Y'know, I saw a magazine article that mentioned that hydrogen-fueled cars have already been developed (and they showed a few pictures) and they said they were being driven in Washington DC and New York City for unit testing. The article estimated that they'd be available for purchase in 2009 and that the hold-up came from the oil lobbyists. So... yeah.
And, regarding disease cures... research labs get funding by the project. Meaning big companies only fund research to develop treatments (instead of cures) because they get a more significant return on their investment that way. Cures are only funded by public interest groups (which don't have that much cash to start with). So, I doubt a cure exists mainly because nobody's getting paid to find it.

I was thinking about the fuel effiency thing last night...
I don't think it's the goverment that is holding out but the oil companys don't want people to get all the good things for cars because then they could start loosing the money to the E85 (ethanol company)
BTW for all those out there getting new cars, make damn sure it can take E85 before pumping it. E85 does not work in standard vehicles, it will ruin your fuel system. also get the E85 stuff, it is way better for the air, the farmer, and the pocket book.

fuckers. Now I'm all riled up and I'll never get to fucking sleep.

I was just thinking this same thing yesterday about cancer.
I totally believe our government lies to us (especially under this administration) and big business is only out for themselves.
I'm convinced that there is a car already out there that would be more fuel efficient.
Sadly, it then makes sense that drug companies, while maybe not hiding a cure for cancer, certainly aren't working on it.
I used to have conspiracytheoriesrus.com and conspiracrytheoryrus.com registered but let them lapse.
