But, that puppy chewing an infant's toes off is just a sad story all around.
BOSSIER CITY, La. -- A pit bull puppy chewed off four of a baby girl's toes while the child's parents slept, police here said Monday. The parents were booked on charges of child desertion and criminal negligence and were being held in the Bossier Parish Jail pending an initial court appearance.
Police said the parents were sleeping on a mattress in the living room of their residence and the month-old girl was in an infant seat beside them when the puppy began chewing on their baby's toes. [full story]
*gasp* a pit bull! See, they're evil, even when they're puppies!
Please.
I really hope that dog isn't put down, but it probably will be. Poor dog.

I KNEW it would end up being labeled as a pit bull. Even though a lot of times dogs that aren't pit bulls are labeled that way to further the breed ban people's agenda. I hate it. Some people should not be allowed to own dogs. Or have children. Or both.

How do you not hear your child screaming next to you for
an hour?! I don't know... something stinks here. I'm inclined to not believe it was the dog.

Shit like that makes me furious. People always assume my dog is a pit bull, and automatically go running the other direction. I'm fine with this for the most part, because it means my pansy ass dog is intimidating to strangers! But it just sucks that it's a results of situations like this one and so many other articles you read about how horrible pit bulls are. Whatever.

what an awful story, and i agree (as usual) with joelle. a baby right next to you SCREAMS in horrific pain for an hour and you don't wake up? i very much doubt it.
by the way- WE have a pit bull mix and a baby, and she still has all of her toes (although there are days
no one would blame the yaz if he took a little nibble). i feel rather strongly about the labeling of pit bulls. dogs are as big as a responsibilty as kids, and some people just shouldn't have either.

How are the parents charged with child desertion if they were sleeping right next to her?
And yeah, how could they NOT hear her screaming in pain? I heard every snuffle and snort my kids made when they were babies. They HAD to sleep in their own rooms so I could get some sleep. And those are just normal, baby-sleep noises.
Did they consider doing any tox screening on the parents?
Poor dog.

What a sad story. Pit bulls are actually really sweet dogs when they aren't bred to be insane. Gah. It seems like the first chance people get to ban a breed, too, they will.
And puppies chew on
everything! Sigh.

i say put the parents down and let the dog live.
why should the puppy be punished for the parents lack of responsibility? they were probably drugged up for them not to hear the baby crying.

Poor DOG?! ... How about Poor BABY!
This whole thing is just nuts. How do you sleep through the painful cries of a baby getting its TOES chewed off?!!! Jaysus!
The most hilarious part, though, is the breeder's "Don't look at me" statement:
Teresa Miller, who sold the puppy to the Hansches, was skeptical the dog did it. "He didn't chew on anything while he was with me. Out of all of them (in the litter), he was the least chewy."
the least CHEWY?! WTF?

Well, sure, poor baby. But really, the baby isn't likely to be "put down" because of this incident, but the dog?
Yeah.

dude. why is no one investigating the parents and finding out what drug they were on to sleep thru that? and, hopefully they'll go to jail or at least get the kid permanently taken away from them. seriously, it's not the dog's fault--it's a dog, it chews things--it's the parents'.
