I hope that everybody had a nice, relaxing Fourth of July weekend. Me? I went to the San Diego County Fair with
Joelle and her upstairs neighbor GFI (and, of course, Domo). We didn't go on any of the rides or try to win anything on the midway (hello, expensive!), but we definitely tried some nasty fried foods, as is the law when you go to county fairs (OK, maybe it's more of an unspoken "law").
Actually, I have to say that the fried mac & cheese on a stick wasn't too bad. Not great, but not too bad. I mean, really... how good can mac & cheese be? It's mac & cheese.
We also did a little bit of shopping... that's another thing I like about the fair - it's like, informercial central, except you get to actually see the products work (or not) in person. Much more impressive. I think Joelle was on the verge of buying a Sham-WOW knock-off, but ultimately decided against it. Me, I didn't buy anything except a half pound bag of gummi and cinnamon bears. Mmmmmmbears.
If you want to check out my fair pictures, start
here. It was a busy day for Domo.
I've got some other things I'd like to talk about, though...
- So, who watched "Super Password" last night? Was it just me, or was Monique Coleman totally googly-eyed over the second contestant? Seriously, she was totally checking him out all night, as if she was saying "Mmmm Hmmm I sure want a piece of that!" Sadly, she wasn't able to help him win $100k, but I think he could have had a date if he wanted one.
- Speaking of TV... who watches that new show "Swingtown"? Anyone? Anyone? I personally like the show, but I haven't heard anyone else's reactions about it. Are people appalled that they're "glamorizing casual sex and swinging"? Or is it seen as a fun, edgy show... sort of a cross between Boogie Nights and Desperate Housewives? Naturally, I think it's fun and edgy... which makes me scared that they'll take it off the air halfway through the season and replace it with re-runs of Muder She Wrote.
- Totally unrelated to TV... OK, so, I walked down to the local 7-11 yesterday to get a Sunday paper. Yes, I walked. Hey, gas is expensive, and... well, it's not like it's never a nice day for a walk here. Anyway, so I grabbed a paper and a drink, walked back home (it's only a coupla blocks either way), and plopped down in front of the TV to relax a bit. A while later, when it came time to read the paper... no comics. No TV guide. No coupons. No Parade Magazine (don't laugh, I always read Parade!). No opinion section (yeah, I actively seek that out and read it, too). No want ads.
Dude, WTF? I hate when you buy a paper, and some asshole has already gone through it and stolen [whatever sections you wanted to read]. I mean, wha, am I gonna go back to the 7-11 and demand another paper? I could do that, but what if they say TFB? I dunno. I guess I still should have tried it, but really, I feel like I've been ripped off, and there's nothing I can really do about it. Don't you hate when that happens?
- I've avoided mentioning this for a while, lest I "jinx" myself, but it's been four weeks now, going on five, so I figure it's safe to tell you. I've been going back to the gym lately. Yup, after over two years of skipping (save for some previous feeble attempts at going), I'm back on the wagon. And not a moment too soon.
Seriously, I am one weak motherfucker right now.
But my body's adapting pretty quickly (thank gawd). Luckily, being a gym rat for over ten years (before my lazy two years) has paid some dividends in regards to getting back into shape. I know what to do, I know what to expect... I just have to do it.
Oh yeah, and today is marquee Monday. Old, silly "traditions" die hard, don't they? (;

Whenever I buy the Sunday paper Parade is one of the things I never fail to read. There's always good stuff in there.

Dude, I LIKE mac n cheese! And the fact that you ate it ON A STICK makes it inherently awesome. I like to buy salt water taffy when I go to the fair.
I watch Swingtown and I like it. I like that they are having the super uptight Janet start to have some fun as well. From what I've seen, other people like it as well, and it did decent in some ratings, so hopefully it'll stick around (unlike anyone who hangs around Jessica Fletcher!)
And that sucks about the paper. Hey I like to read Parade if it's lying around too!
Oh and hooray for sticking with the gym thing! Now that you've made the announcement there is no backing out!

Oh and I KNOW that one of the reasons you're watching Swingtown has to be to get fashion ideas! Like, what ugly shirts you should be on the lookout for.
Now, I pretty much missed the 70s, but from what I've heard, they've been doing an awesome job on being authentic, so it's gotta be kinda fun to look at the furnishings, outfits, little knicknacks lying around, etc. Unless you're only watching for the swingin'

I really miss going to the little county fairs. I used to go and wonder which carnies will stay behind and never leave.
I do like consuming the over fried, greasy food that turns my stomach into a volcano later. The idea of Mac and Cheese on a stick sounds pretty cool and your right, it is after all Mac and Cheese, not too many ways to screw that up.
I think I will experiment in the lab and cook up a batch and see how it turns out. Of course I will post pics of the feeble attempt.
As for the shows you mentioned, I don't get those over here yet but I am sure they will start airing after the first season is over. We are usually a season behind the states. Guess it has something to do with copy rights or whatever the heck they call it.
And the good ol' sunday paper. I always checked before I bought it just to be sure and I never ever take the top paper. Yeah I know, weird but it's such a habit that even here in Lebanon I never take the top paper. Funny though, they don't have Parade in there or the Sunday comics. But there is a wealth of political cartoons that are often funny.
I did ask a guy one time if I could just buy the middle pieces of the newspaper when it came time to buy that sunday paper.....he looked at me like I was from another planet and the question wasn't registering in his head. So I repeated and he said, "I don't know, I have to ask the manager". lol...eh ok. Never mind, don't strain yourself...he failed to see the humor but I did and laughed as I left.
I am happy to hear you decided to go back to the gym. I have been a virtual couch potato, with studies and all that, that I have not gone for a few years myself. Maybe I will jump on your wagon and go to the gym too. Well actually, I already started going but jumping on your wagon would mean I would feel the obligation to continue going :o).
I wish the best for you in your endeavor, sounds like a plan...by the way, I didn't forget about the photos of the dollar store lol...i just haven't been back.

I have been frying mac and cheese for years. Alton Brown did a show on mac and cheese and talked about frying it into a toast. It's awesome, never had it at the fair though.
I like Swingtown. It reminds me of my childhood, not exactly sure if that is good or bad.

I am a bit more stressed out than I should be that I missed Super Password. Have to check it out next week. I am a game show addict, I will still watch Password and Pyramid reruns.

Just piping in to say yup, I like Swingtown, and like you, figure that means it won't last long. Hopefully we're both wrong!
Congrats with the gym...I'm suffering going back after three weeks off so I can't even imagine how tough it must be.
Fried mac n cheese...yum! Ok, I've only had it at TGIFridays but I loved it there even when I ate it too fast and burned the roof of my mouth. Now I wanna try it on a stick, heh.

I've been watching Swingtown. I'm not sure if I like it or not, but I keep watching just in case I do. You're right though-it is a cross between DH and BN. Too many sotrylines though. If they keep the show going they are going to have to drop one or two.
I always read Parade the rare times I get a paper. It's like National Enquirer Lite. Nothing toooo tablod-y, but fun to read all the same.
Congrats on the gym. I've been going for over 2 months now and have not seen one single change. Not one. But I keep plugging away. I hope you make more progress than I do.

congrats on new gym patronage! I'm getting back on the WW wagon myself.
I love Ask Marilyn in the Parade. I learn all kinds of neat things from her.
Re: Swingtown: I've been avoiding the show. Not because it's appalling but I'm just coming out of a swinging relationship and the subject matter is too touchy right now (well, relationship is still here, but the swing part has been taken out b/c of crazy-people drama...if something falls in our laps we'll talk about it but we're not seeking it out because people that we've had fun with turn out to be batshit insane). I'll probably catch it on DVD if it's not on hulu.com.
I love mac and cheese too (especially the homemade kind) but fried on a stick? gosh...mouth gets all greasy and bleh just thinking about it. lol.

I loooooove Swingtown. The husband got me into it... and no, he wasn't trying to tell me something. I love that Jack Davenport from Coupling is in it with his hot American accent.... yum!
The paper thing... that's the reason I always take the paper from below the top one. Never grab the top one because some douche will do what you described. douche....
Gym is good. I've been going faitfully since March and I've dropped a size and built my guns... going to Hawaii is freaking me out!
