d’oh!

OK, so there's this weatherman in Vegas, and he's reading the forecast on the air...

"For tomorrow, 60 degrees, Martin Luther Coon King Jr. Day, gonna see some temperatures in the mid-60s." (full story)

Oh yeah. He got fired, even after multiple public apologies.

Then I got to thinking... what if that was just an unfortunate mistake, and not some racist upbringing coming to the forefront? Should he still have been fired? Is that fair?

My conclusion? Hell yeah, he should be fired. Not because I'm like, overly politically correct or anything... but hey, in any business, if you fuck up big and everybody sees it, whether it's your fault or not, someone's gotta take the fall. It might not be fair, but life isn't always fair.

And before you conservatives jump all over me, calling me a bleeding heart liberal or some other bullshit, imagine this scenario - he's doing his forecast, and he mentions George Pussy Bush. Honest mistake. Now, should he be fired? Of fucking course.
Of course the dope deserved to be sacked, end of story excaim

Note - the word that I had to type in was "shower;" how weird is that ?
What a jerk, definitely had to be fired no matter on purpose or not. I guess I am a negative person because I so believe it was on purpose wink
i've never even heard that used before. but yeah, stupid move nonetheless.

heh. my word? masochist.
i totally believe it was on purpose. i mean, who the fuck says an antiquated racist term like "coon" anymore anyways?
OH MY FUCKING GOD. This is the company I used to work for! I ALMOST WORKED AT THAT STATION! But everyone there seemed to have their head up their ass. Seriously, they'd just "cleaned house" and changed their entire staff for the second time in six months when I'd interviewed. Guess the weather guy was part of the latest change in staff. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Oh man. This is funny to me. Funny because now I'm glad I didn't take the job.
i'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and think that it was just a weird slipup, but even so, he needs to go. keeping him on would have sent the wrong message to the community.

but even if it was a slip-up, the word has to be somewhere in his vocabulary. nobody slips up with words they've never used before.
i agree with patricia. i'm thinking even if it was a slip, he's used that word before hence the slip...
If Ron Burgandy got fired for saying "Go fuck yourself, San Diego", then this dude should TOTALLY get fired for the coon remark.

And you're right. Who the hell does say coon??
Remember when they had that statue celebrating James Earl Jones and it "accidentally" was engraved James Earl Ray? Now someone there MUST have been fired!

Ohh - I get to type starlet! Perfect for me!
hahaha Ron Burgandy.
This reminds me of Sunday. We were talking about kids sucking their thumbs and my friend's wife said, "Oh, she's a cock, I mean thumb sucker?"
I've only heard that discriminatory phrase once, it was on a show called Tour Of Duty, and they only said it because a the character was trying to explain how he used to joke around using racist terms like that. The character was getting slack from his racist friends because he hung out with the black and latino soldiers more than the white ones.
OK, but what if he wasn't saying the word "coon." What if his mouth just kind of got twisted up and the wrong SOUND (not the wrong word) came out and it was the "oo" sound, so it just sounded like "coon."

Still be fired?

Personally, I think I agree with Patricia and no matter the circumstances it sends a message to the community if they don't let him go.

I just didn't see it the way all of you did, that he was saying that particular word
well, for one thing, in his apologies, he basically admitted that he said "coon."

but i'll play along. ok, so he stumbled and said something that sounded like coon. still be fired? i think so. i mean, what if he stumbled and said a word that sounded like "nigger"? yeah. fired.
Can you imagine him waking up the next morning, thinking "What the fuck was I thinking."
On the job for six months? Yeah, good luck getting another job in media anywhere for the next long while.
slip up? i'm sorry, but you don't just accidentally say the word "coon" or any other word THAT bad. you must be using it an awful lot to whoops! say it on the job. on the air. on fucking tv.
I wasnt going to reply, but I get to use the word "topless." Cant let THAT go to waste.

I really am glad to see the station take a stand on this. What an ass!
What patricia said. One doesn't accidentally use words which are not part of one's normal vocabulary.

WTF? Everybody else gets fun words like masochist and topless, and I get flower? I want a refund. tongue laugh
I don't think it has anything to do with being liberal or conservative on the opinion - they guy should have been fired.
My word is Joelle. Aww....

Meanwhile, I think the guy should be punched.
That guy can't possibly be originally from, using a term like "coon". People around here say that type of redneck shit.
In an apology he made he said "Apparently, I accidentally said Martin Luther Kong Jr., which I apologize about -- slip of the tongue." He deserved to be fired. Also, the "slip" was taped and aired anyways.
