They're ferocious! They're mean! They're aggressive! They eat babies and attack people!
I mean, look at this!
Daddy. See how the dog is trying to eat that guy's head?
And as if that weren't enough carnage, check this out:
Junior.
It's horrible, isn't it. I don't know why we don't just take all pit bulls out and shoot them. I mean, my god, think of the children! The children!
Seriously, though... pit bulls get such a bad rap. I mean, they're dogs, just like any other dog. Sure, some are aggressive and scary, but that's because of the owners. There are no bad dogs, just bad owners. More often than not, calm, even-tempered, friendly owners will have calm, even-tempered, and friendly dogs, whether they're poodles or labs or pit bulls.
Don't fear the dog. Fear the owner.

*points finger* Fear mongerer!!
I just can't understand why when a pit bull attacks "oh, let's kill 'em all" but if a Golden Retriever attacks "oh, we need to fine the owners and find out what was wrong with this golden to make it behave in such an uncharacteristic fashion." Any dog with the wrong breeding/temperament and wrong training/treatment can attack. Any.
It's all training, breeding, and training. Yes, I said training twice. Because it's that important.

It really saddens me that they get such a bad rap. They are lovable and friendly dogs just like any other breed. Like you said, it is the people who own these dogs and mistreat them who are to blame.

Such cute pictures! How could anyone hate all pitbulls when viewing pictures like that?

My aunt has a pit bull named Sweetie that we all love a ton! She was a rescue puppy that was used for bait.

I don't know, mikey. Some breeds are just mean. My uncle had a pit bull and no amount of positive reinforcement could ever make that dog not want to chew your arm off. The dog finally had to be put down after he tried to eat one of my cousins.

Are there mean dogs? Yes. Does that mean we should blame the entire breed and label them all as aggressive? No.

It's true that they have such an undeserved bad rap. We adopted a pitbull/basset hound mix from the dog pound a year and half ago. When everyone heard she was half pit bull they all pretty much frowned and were worried for us. Turns out she is the sweetest, friendliest, most cuddly dog I've ever had.
In case you're wondering what a pitbull/basset looks like
http://www.dogster.com/dogs/600918 (her dogster profile). And yeah, her head is just as big as it looks in the picture.

I do worry about them at least around my kids. We were at the park and my oldest was wandering up to one wanting to pet it like they do with all dogs.
I in a very unbecoming way ran up to my kid and picked them up.
The owners were this is a very sweet dog! As if to imply that I was being paranoid.
I know I was being paranoid.
Just because you are paranoid though does not mean that they aren't out to get you.
I would rather appear panicked and a scaredy cat than have something happen to my baby. Think what you want about me. I am going to go with my instincts tell me. What my instincts told me is that it would have been very easy for that dog to clamp onto my kid's head. I would rather that the dog clamp onto my leg or arm.
Maybe I'm not a dog person. Not a cat person either. I guess I am a fish person. Except for Piranha. *Shudder*

Unfortunately I can't tell whether or not the owner is responsible just by looking at them. Generally speaking irresponsible people LOVE to own big attack breed dogs.
So I avoid the dogs and make sure that my family is out of the way too. I will not go anywhere near a pit bull and never will. If I see one off the leash, I call animal control. If I go to a house and they have one, I leave. Sad but true.
