Humuhumunukunukuapua'a. It just rolls off the tongue, yanno?
The Humuhumunukunukuapua'a used to be the official state fish of Hawai'i, but for some odd reason, it lost its title in 1990. No fish was ever named to replace it, so it has remained as the unofficial state fish.
Now, we see that the Humuhumu may gain back its title. A bill has been introduced to the governor, and if she signs it (and she probably will), the humuhumu will again be the
Official State Fish of Hawai'i. Go, humu!

For some reason, my friends and relatives are all impressed by the fact that I know how to say "humuhumunukunukuapua'a" -- and can do it quickly as well.
Doesn't take much to impress people these days, I guess.

I like that the name of the fish got shorter every time you wrote it. Humuhumunukunukuapua'a, Humuhumu, Humu. Well, it amused me anyway.
So how does one say that name?

Once you learn to say it, it gets easier and easier.
It also helps to break it up at first: humu-humu, nuku-nuku, apua'a! You can make your own song out of it if you wanted to! Which I didn't. Okay maybe I did. But only to help the Boyfriend learn how to say it! Of course now he sings it.

what is it with that fish and me this week? my horoscope said that I was like the Humuhumunukunukuapua'a in that I've got two spines, the strength of both I'll be needing (am going through break-up, moving, new apt, etc etc ) and how they making snorting sounds like pigs and that I would be astounding people with my amazing abilities or some shit.
I don't know about that whole pig snorting thing, but I get the two spines part.
