Honestly, I'm surprised that I haven't seen anyone (well, any of the blogs I frequent) talk about this...
The Singing Bee. On NBC, not the obviously ripped-off Fox version called "Don't Forget the Lyrics" or whatever. The Singing Bee.
Now, I wasn't sure that'd I'd like this show. I thought it would be more like the new game show formats, where they pick one contestant and stretch 7 minutes of show into a half hour, but no. They got right to it. And I loved how they picked the contestants - they played a song most everybody's at least heard, and Joey Fatone (yeah, he's the host... and surprisingly, not annoying) goes out into the audience, looking for people who are singing along. He picks six to be the contestants.
I won't give away all of the show, but rest assured, they don't really dawdle around and waste time, and the lyrics come fast. And, no matter if you love or hate the show, by this point, you'll find yourself singing along. Well, screaming. And sure, there are some easy ones in there, but there are also some stumpers. "I'm your Venus, I'm your fire,
at your desire." Really? At your desire? I call bullshit. [
I'm wrong, they're right]
Oh, and they're not generous at all. Throw in an extra "well" or "and" or anything like that? Bzzzt.
So, while I was wishing for a Jeopardy-style Q&A show, where the lyrics come fast and furious, I must say, I'm very pleased with the Singing Bee. And, in all honestly, I have to say that it's the first show in a long, long time that I'd be willing to watch "live" (as opposed to on DVR). That's the kind of show where you want to watch with all of your doors and windows open, so you can hear if any of your neighbors are singing (screaming) along with the show.
So, if you missed this show this week, make a note to watch it next week. It's a great show, and they need to make it into a "more than just once a week" show. Hell, they should just get rid of that tired ol' "Deal or no Deal," and replace it with The Singing Bee. Sorry to those people who still like Deal, or are Howie fans... but that show sucks. Bee rules!

Sometimes, they just get the exact right balance of this versus that, up versus down, and all the planets align just so, and the show is just a gem.
Then they go and fucking cancel it after one fucking season. Those heartless bastards.

I watched it and enjoyed the shit out of it. It has actual content, and not Ryan Seacrest brand fake suspense.
Things I learned:
1.) I don't know the lyrics to songs I think I know the lyrics to.
2.) I've never heard of some songs that are apparently really, really popular.
3.) Smashmouth is still stupid, even when someone else is singing their songs.

Addicted after one episode. Love the fast pace, love that it's not one of those stupid ladder game shows (like the Fox version.) HATE! This show is so entertaining it even makes the ubiquitous !!!OMGPONIES!!!111!!! game show contestants not-so-annoying.

I always thought it was "heart's desire". made sense to me. and I gotta say, vs. at your desire, mine still makes more sense. curious.

OMG, I saw a commercial for it and TOTALLY meant to watch it, but I forgot! I will go program it into my Tivo now! I MUST know how many songs I know correctly (or incorrectly!)

I saw the commercial for it, but I thought it looked too much like the drunken karaoke you see at bars. Besides, I've been too busy watching the World Series of Pop Culture. Now THAT show makes me yell at my TV!

innnnnnnnnteresting. I always sang it "What's your desire?"
"At your desire" does seem rather odd.

Based on your recommendation, I remote scheduled this on my TiVo (since I'm housesitting and won't be home for like two more weeks).

yeah, very cool show actually. it's quick-paced. a good variety of games. go from six contestants to one winner in the span of one show. also, the band didn't suck!
i think because the prize money is potentially only $50k, they don't have to stretch anything ... which is WAY better.

Watching right now and loving it, though I'm not doing as good as I would have thought. Still no rock n roll jeapordy though...
