File under: stuff I've always wondered, but never really made an effort to look up.
Two different phrases: batshit crazy and apeshit.
So, I was trying to think about what makes bat shit so much crazier than any other mammalian or flying animal shit. The only thing I could think of is that, well... maybe some person way back when encountered some bat shit, and maybe somehow got rabies. Does that sound plausible? Or is it something totally different from that? Were bats chosen arbitrarily?
And apeshit. Why does someone go apeshit? Because apes like to throw their shit? Couldn't you just call it monkey shit then? Because, really, I've heard of smaller monkeys throwing shit, but never big apes, like gorillas or something. Can you imagine getting hit by gorilla shit? That might knock you over and give you a concussion.
Man, why isn't there an etymology site that I can consult? Sure, it's 7:14 AM and I'm running late for work, but I want to know if I'm right. This is driving me... batshit crazy. And if I don't find the meanings soon, I'll go... apeshit.
OK, those were too easy.
Seriously though... if anyone knows, please... let me know.

I have never heard of batshit crazy, but I say apeshit and I have no freaking clue why or where it came from, but I do say it all the time!
How about "shitbird" - my mom used to call people that all the time growing up "Knock it off you shitbird" HA, it still makes me laugh!

I always wondered if apeshit was just another way of saying they went bananas.

I feel like I'm stepping on Craig's toes here.
Bat shit, aka, guano, is useful stuff in a fertilizer sense, but its also highly toxic to humans. Having an excess of it in your house or attic is dangerous, since it has been known to really mess people up.
AKA, make them go batshit crazy.

Hey! I found an etymology site for you:
http://www.etymonline.com/. This was their basic description for apeshit:O.E. apa, from P.Gmc. *apan (cf. O.S. apo, O.N. api, Du. aap, Ger. affe), perhaps borrowed in P.Gmc. from Celtic (cf. O.Ir. apa) or Slavic (cf. O.Bohemian op, Slovak opitza), probably ult. from a non-I.E. language. The verb "to imitate" (1632) is implied in to play the ape (1579), and the noun sense of "one who mimics" may date from c.1230. Ape-man, hypothetical "missing link," is from 1879, in a translation of Haeckel.
To go ape (in emphatic form, go apeshit) "go crazy" is 1955, U.S. slang. To lead apes in hell (1579) was the fancied fate of one who died an old maid.
They didn't really have anything about batshit though.

I've only ever seen a gorilla throw shit. Actually, it reach up inside of it's ass, pulled the shit out (I've always supposed there was some sort of constipation issue there that helped anger the thing), and then threw it at the crowd. It only hit one guy before everyone moved far enough away to watch from a safe distance.
It was like a car wreck...terrible to watch, but we really couldn't help it. That thing was MAD. (It was at the San Diego Zoo, oh so many years ago...don't know if that poor gorilla is still there throwing his shit when he's mad, but you definitely have access to check it out! Look for the polar bear that likes to pace back and forth in her habitat as well. I love her!)

But what about bullshit and horse shit? When somebody says something that my uncle deems stupid, which is usually just about anything any of us says, he says "Oh that's horse shit." What about horse shit made deemed it appropriate for use in that way?
